CURRICULUM

Our program’s clinical rotations emphasize critical care and pediatrics experiences.  We also offer unique rotations in neuro-intensive critical care and early exposure to unparalleled ultrasound training and EMS.


Throughout these rotations, residents will encounter complex patients with varying acuities in various settings including community rotations, acute care units, emergency departments, intensive care units, and surgical units.  Because of these unique opportunities, our residents graduate as well-rounded physicians who can thrive in both academic and community practices.

PGY-1:

Orientation (2 weeks)

**Pediatric EM shifts are longitudinal and continue throughout your PGY-2 and -3 years (2-3 per month)

**Trauma shifts are longitudinal and continue through PGY-2 and -3 years (2-3 per month)

Affiliated Hospitals:

University Hospital – Our main hospital site. 633 bed, Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center, HEART center, comprehensive stroke center and tertiary referral center serving the most critically ill and injured patients from San Antonio, Bexar County, South Texas and beyond. Volumes of over 92,000 patients annually, with a 28% admission rate and 14% ICU admission rate. We have an active liver, lung, kidney and transplant center and cutting edge cancer center too. 


Methodist Hospital System – community hospital system in San Antonio. Our PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents rotate throughout the community sites to learn all about community medicine. Many of our graduates staff these hospitals and the rotations provide great networking opportunities for our residents.


Baptist Hospital System – community hospital system in San Antonio. Our PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents rotate throughout the community sites to learn all about community medicine. Many of our graduates staff these hospitals and the rotations provide great networking opportunities for our residents.


Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center - 268 bed hospital across the street from University Hospital. Our interns spend one month in the operating room with skilled anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to master the airway.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound

Dedicated PGY-1 ultrasound rotation within first half of PGY 1 year for maximum ultrasound exposure and skill development, dedicated Ultrasound track, large ultrasound division with 7 fellowship-trained faculty.

Emergency Department is accredited through ACEP’s Clinical Ultrasound Accreditation Program (CUAP).

Multiple faculty completed the inaugural Focus of Designated Practice (FPD) in Advanced Emergency Ultrasound through the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).

Pediatrics

University Hospital (UH) has its own pediatric ED where residents regularly work.

PGY-1: Two dedicated pediatric emergency medicine / trauma blocks. One in the first half of the year and the second in the latter half. One week of dedicated pediatric anesthesia with Tejas anesthesia group.

PGY-2:  Longitudinal shifts at UH built into your EM months. One month of Pediatric ICU at University Hospital.
